Ethnic Transmissions Original Profile at Rumah Panjai
"Ethnic Transmissions (ET) is an alternative/indie Iban rock band formed in 2004 in Kuching, Sarawak East Malaysia (Borneo) & consist of Macmillan Jua Lungan (vocals & guitars), Dennis Jonathan Fraude (keyboards), Daniel Ading (lead guitars), David Barieng Jacques (drums) and newest member Norman Ading (bass). In 2003, Dennis, Daniel (they were band mates in Sibu where they grew up) and Macmillan were in a nu-metal band called Pike when during one of their jams, experimented with an alternative sounding song that Macmillan wrote in Iban called ‘Ngarap’. Due to the fact that most Iban songs at the time were either joget or dangdut, they just wanted to hear how the language would sound like sung in a completely different style. To their amazement, it sounded good. Pike went on as it did until the band disbanded when their drummer moved to KL.Somewhere in 2004 Macmillan was approached by a local production company with the offer to act in an Iban telemovie called Lagu Sayau. Not only was he to act, he was also asked to compose a song that became the soundtrack for the movie. Macmillan took up the offer and the song ‘Engka’ came to be. He then asked Susanna to help him play the keyboards for the production of the song along with Dennis and Daniel, and he also got David who played for a band called Afterglow to help with the drums. Ethnic Transmissions was born. Soon after, 2 more songs and an acoustic version of ‘Engka’ were recorded and packaged into the band’s debut album entitled ‘Engka’ and released under their self-owned record label Fish*Farm Records.Recently there has been a swap of ranks in the band, when Su decided to leave. Dennis took up the keys and Norman Ading stepped in for the bass. The band’s sound is influenced by bands such as:Gin Blossoms, Def Leppard, The Get-Up Kids, 3rd Eye Blind, Cinammon, Mew, Taking Back Sunday, Dashboard Confessionals, Coldplay, Vertical Horizon,The Color Fred, Jimmy Eat World, All American Rejects, Snow Patrol, The Fray, The New Frontiers, Deathcab For Cutie, Ash, Semisonic etc.
On the 18th of September 2008, Ethnic Transmissions’ effort received recognition when by submission of ‘Engka’; the band was awarded Promising New Male Singer during The Dayak Music Awards or DAMA organized by The Dayak Chamber of Commerce. In November 2008, 'Engka' hit the no 1 spot and stayed on top of the charts for more than 2 weeks on Wai FM's Lagu Tebilang Iban chart show hosted by Bana Jimbat. Following these, Ethnic Transmissions’ 1st album ‘Engka’ has also officially sold out within just 1 year after its release with 50% of the sales generated from mail order. All these facts conclude that the new Dayak generation is looking for a new fresher sound in the Sarawakian music scene and ET will deliver.
Ethnic Transmissions (ET)
Right now ET is in the midst of pre production for their upcoming 2nd album which will definitely be a step up from ‘Engka’. Progressive, epic and atmospheric would be the best way to describe the sound ET will project through the 2nd record, scheduled for release this year. The 1st single from this upcoming album will be released on all Sarawakian radio stations by February end & will be available for free download on RP & Myspace. You will be notified.Ethnic Transmissions (ET) aim is to open up a new musical direction for the Sarawakian music industry & spur a new generation of singers/songwriters/bands/recording labels; away from the predominantly joget/dangdut sound that has been around for 20 so years.Too long have our people been exploited by the same, stale, unimaginative recycled racket regurgitated by capitalizing and monopolizing taukes who call themselves producers. It is time we take back the industry & change it for good! It is time for a Mindset Evolution through a Musical Revolution.Ethnic Transmissions (ET) is not about glamour. We are not about fame. We are about Change! To those who have supported us and our strife – thank you so very much To those with talent who hear a calling to join this movement – we implore you All of you can make a difference.
